Excerpt from The Must See Hiking Destinations of Long Island: “Our island has a wilderness called the Pine Barrens. The Pine Barrens is what most of the land on Long Island was protected for because it has many unique species…The porous, sandy soil works to help take out pollutants from the water when it passes through it. Eventually, it reaches one of the three main aquifers which are the Upper Glacial Aquifer, the Lloyd Aquifer, and the Magothy Aquifer…The Lloyd Aquifer is 1,800 feet below the surface and the water is roughly 6,000 years old which is about the time of the invention of writing…The Pine Barrens are truly amazing because they encompass so many great natural features such as rare coastal plains ponds, the dwarf pines, marshes, kettle holes, 100 foot white pines, and much more.”
